First Grade

Welcome to 1st grade! We are excited to see you here. We can’t wait to meet your family.  In 1st grade, students at SPPS Online School will learn a variety of new skills. This new learning will take place through Google Meet, on iPads, and using Seesaw with the support of other online resources, the learning experience may be adapted to leverage technology. Here's a summary of what 1st graders can expect to learn.

Reading:

  • Phonics and decoding skills
  • Sight word recognition.
  • Reading simple texts with comprehension.
  • Beginning to understand story elements (characters, setting, plot).

Writing:

  • Writing letters and words.
  • Forming sentences with proper punctuation and capitalization.
  • Creative writing with a focus on expressing ideas and details.
  • Introduction to basic editing and revising skills.

Math:

  • Counting and representing numbers up to 100.
  • Addition and subtraction within 20.
  • Understanding basic geometric shapes.
  • Measurement (length, weight, capacity).
  • Introduction to time and money concepts.

Technology:

  • Introduction to digital tools and resources.
  • Using iPads for educational purposes, including interactive apps and online learning platforms such as Seesaw

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL):

  • Building social skills, including empathy and cooperation:
  • Managing emotions and conflict resolution.

Critical Thinking and Problem Solving:

  • Developing basic problem-solving skills through activities and puzzles.
